  • Dr. Jonathan Saraga

Orchid Denver 1448 Market Street, Denver, United States

Show from 7-8:30.  Reservations strongly suggested.  Doors at 6pm. Arrive early and order dinner. Manhattan, NYC native, trumpeter and composer Jonathan Saraga has been said by All About Jazz to possess the musical “wisdom and maturity of veterans more than twice his age,” and that “his chops, lust for musical life and don't-box-me-into-a-stylistic-corner mentality make him seem like the musical offspring of trumpeters Dave Douglas and Ambrose Akinmusire." A few years after receiving the Fred Mazart Music Award in 2005 as he began his collegiate studies, Jonathan won the 2007 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Solo Competition. Shortly after receiving his Bachelor of Music degree, he competed again, this time as one of five finalists in the 2009 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition. After obtaining his Master of Music degree in 2011, Jonathan was among two trumpeters selected from an international pool to participate in the 2011 School for Improvisational Music summer intensive program. That same year, he self-released his debut album, First Vision, which All About Jazz deemed "a skillfully conceived and exquisitely realized debut that brings to mind the edgy, envelope-pushing hard bop of many a Blue Note record in the early 1960s." They even hailed it as a "stand up and take notice musical offering," and spoke of its "rare blend of individuality and maturity." World-renowned trumpeter Jim Rotondi deemed Jonathan's playing on the album as "unique" and "inventive", and said that it breaths "soul, intelligence, great technique and acute musical awareness." In 2014, it was re-released on the Blue Truffle Music record label. That same year, after touring the U.S. with an off-Broadway production of Damn Yankees, and after working as lead and solo trumpeter for Princess cruise lines, Jonathan was awarded an audition for the Artist Diploma program at Juilliard in, having been one of only two trumpeters even considered. A year later, in 2015, he was one of only five trumpeters invited to participate in the Banff Summer Intensive Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music in Alberta, Canada, and in 2016, received an ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award for his composition, “Uprising”, featured on his second album, Journey to a New World (Fresh Sound Records/2017). Jonathan’s sophomore release which has been called “inventive” and “assertive” by JazzWise, (U.K.) has also been said to feature “astonishing maturity” (Jazz Magazine, France), “a deft compositional approach and some first-rate musicianship” (All About Jazz, U.S.). The Saraga-penned original compositions also received a total of 4 semi-finalist nominations and 1 finalist/Honorable Mention nominations in the 2016 and 2017 International Songwriting Competitions, the latter award being received by only 1% of the original 16,000+ entries from 140 countries. The album has aired on radio stations around the world, and has been featured on Kansas Public Radio’s Top 10 Jazz CD list 2 weeks in a row, amongst albums by Esperanza Spaulding, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Christian McBride. Jonathan’s release has also received three 4-star reviews in JazzWise (U.K) and All About Jazz (U.S.) as well as a interview with jazz author, Ruth Fischer. In addition to completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2019, Dr. Saraga was accepted to the 2019 Early Fall Musicians in Residence program at the Banff Center, and achieved finalist status in the 2019 New Jazz Works grant presented by Chamber Music America. In 2020 he was one of three trumpeters to make it to the final round of auditions for the GRAMMY-winning Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra’s 4th Trumpet Chair, and one of sixteen to receive a commission from the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers. He was also selected to present at the International Society for Improvised Music conference at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne, Australia as well as at the Association for Popular Music Education conference at Edinburgh Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Also in 2020, Saraga received a Downbeat Student Music Award in the Outstanding Performance Undergraduate Category for Latin Group, was selected to participate in the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, and received grants from United States Artists, the University of Colorado Boulder Music Advisory Board, the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, the Actors Fund/Local 802 Musicians Union, the Jazz Foundation of America, the Afro-Latin Jazz Alliance, and the Recording Academy/MusiCares. In 2021, Jonathan received Downbeat Student Music Awards in the Graduate College Outstanding Arrangements category for Small Ensemble and Outstanding Performance Undergraduate Category for Latin Group, was accepted into Chashama’s chaNorth Artist in Residence program, made it to the finals in the selection process for the Haleakala National Park Artist in Residence program, made it onto the waitlist for the Millay Colony of the Art’s Core Residency program and achieved semi-finalist status in the Unsigned Only Music Competition. Saraga was also one of two finalists to compete for the U.S. Air Force Academy Band’s jazz/commercial trumpet and U.S. Navy Band Commodores’ jazz trumpet vacancies that year. In 2022, he became a selected member of the Recording Academy. Since 2006, Saraga has appeared on over 30 albums and has been actively performing throughout Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Canada and the U.S. He’s played with the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, the Birdland Big Band, the Mingus Big Band, Orrin Evans' Captain Black Big Band, the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, the Jimmy Greene Big Band, Remy Le Boeuf’s Assembly of Shadows Orchestra, the Terraza Big Band, the Valery Ponomarev Big Band, Manuel Valera’s New Cuban Express Big Band, the Samuel Torres Big Band, the Jihye Lee Jazz Orchestra, the Hyeseon Hong Jazz Orchestra, the Tracy Yang Jazz Orchestra, the Erica Seguine/Shannon Baker Jazz Orchestra, the Migiwa Miyajima Jazz Orchestra and Brass Against, as well as ensembles led by Tyshawn Sorey, Steve Coleman, and Henry Cole. Dick Metcalf went further, giving the album a 5/5 at Contemporary Jazz Fusion while saying that the trio is “totally ‘with’ each other, particularly on this stunning piece of jazz!  I’ve no doubt your ears will be just as amazed as mine were!” In addition to his work as a jazz musician, Jon keeps busy as an in demand drummer for all genres.  He has played with Ryan and Annalyse, Marshal White and the Regiment, Monquez Pippins, Sharina Louise, Lotus Berry, Sons of Cloda and Robert Whaley.  He also co-leads Linden St. Connection with singer/co-writer Caitlin Bement.  Furthermore, Jon has begun to work behind the glass, acting as a producer for Monquez Pippins, Sean Britt, Linden St. Connection and Jordan Ziskin’s debut album Crazy Child.  In 2018, the Hartford Jazz Society nominated Jon an emerging artist.  In 2021, Jon was awarded a Student Music Award by DownBeat Magazine for Outstanding Original Composition and was named the ASCAP Louis Armstrong Scholar.  In 2022, Jon won the UNO Svenson Jazz Composition Contest.  Since moving to New Orleans, Jon has played with Grammy-winning saxophonist Brent Rose (New Orleans Nightcrawlers) and Grammy-nominated pianist Andrui Yanovski (Cha Wa). Jon has a BM – Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado and a Masters of Music degree from the University of New Orleans.  Jon has studied with Jim White, John Riley, Grey Barrier, Johnny Vidacovich, and Ricky Sebastian.

  • Deadphish Orchestra – Orchid Denver Live Music Event

Orchid Denver 1448 Market Street, Denver, United States

Doors at 9, show from 10pm -1:30 am. The Deadphish Orchestra is a quartet of Colorado Musicians who, above all, are close friends who have played together for many years. They had played Grateful Dead songs together, and they had played Phish songs together.  But they got to wondering what would happen if they tried to merge the music of these two bands, the Granddaddies and Daddies of the jamband scene. While these two bands have their surface similarities, most fans realize that their actual musical styles are quite different. The Grateful Dead are an earthy, folky, bluesy band where Phish is sharper around the edges–funky and more aggressive. But both bands have an improvisational approach to their live shows, and it is in that spontaneity where the magic really happens. The guys in DPO have posed themselves a unique challenge in merging the two styles.  Setlists end up with segues that look like Divided Sky > Morning Dew > Divided Sky, or Help  > Slip > Frankenstein.  Or how about Mike’s Song > Stella Blue > Weekapaug Groove.  Or even stranger, like My Friend, My Friend of the Devil…or It Must Have Been The Roses Are Free.  You can see that between the vast repertoires of the two bands, the possibilities are endless. It’s just about as much fun as humans are allowed to have. Guest Musicians We are fortunate to know a lot of great musicians here in Colorado and elsewhere, and one of our favorite things to do is invite guest musicians to join us for songs, sets, or entire shows.  DPO has had many guest musicians onstage with us, including: John Kadlecik (Furthur) Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident) Fareed Haque (Garaj Mahal, Fareed Haque Group) Darol Anger (David Grisman Quintet, etc.) Andy Thorn (Leftover Salmon, Drew Emmitt Band) Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon) Chris Pandolfi & Jeremy Garrett (Infamous Stringdusters) Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain String Band, Jeff Austin Band) Stu Allen (JGB, Mars Hotel, etc.) Dave Hebert (JGB) Edwin Hurwitz (Shakedown Street, Shockra) Tyler Grant (Grant Farm, Drew Emmitt Band) Pete Wall (Particle, Motet) Bridget Law (Elephant Revival) Larry Keel (Bluegrass Legend!) Jeff Lloyd (The Heavy Pets) Brock Butler (Perpetual Groove)

"Ghana's most artistic drummer." - Modern Ghana "Paa Kow has taken the world music of his native Ghana, and tossed it into a basket with heaps of American influences to create an album that the great purveyors of world music - the Paul Simon's and the Bela Fleck's of the world - would envy." - Marquee Magazine “Take the beat of Ghana’s traditional sound, add some American flavor, and mix it with Paa Kow’s stellar drumming chops. That is the musical recipe for a flavoursome sound." - Soul Safari “The drumming makes the music such a captivating and bewitching listen, and that’ll make you want to dance along to the infectious rhythms.  This is proper fusion music." - Louder Than War

  • DJ Logic – Halloween at Orchid

Orchid Denver 1448 Market Street, Denver, United States

Join Orchid Denver for a magical and fun Halloween experience featuring DJ Logic and Burlesque performances from Missfits Entertainment. Doors at 7, Burlesque from 8-10pm, DJ Logic from 10pm-close. The theorem of turntablist as musician has been long proven in the capable hands of DJ Logic, whom with jazz as his foundation has become a wax innovator by crossing genres and mixing his sound across the map. As one of the world’s most accomplished turntablists, DJ Logic is widely credited for introducing jazz into the hip–hop realms and is considered by most as a highly-respected session musician and an innovative bandleader. Since his emergence in the early nineties amidst the Bronx hip-hop scene, the New York City based deejay has been amassing a veritable mountain of collaborations, including a full-fledged band with members of Blues Traveler (The John Popper Project ft. DJ Logic), a trio with Steve Molitz & Freekbass (Headtronics), a jazz project with Georgian prodigy Beka Gochiasvili, and as a member of Grammy-winning Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra’s The Offense of the Drum album. He also has a long list of other collaborations with artists ranging from the likes of Bob Weir, John Mayer, Medeski Martin and Wood, Christian McBride, O.A.R., Carly Simon, Marcus Miller, Jack Johnson, Vernon Reid, Warren Haynes, Charlie Hunter, Jack DeJohnette, Ben Harper, Mos Def, The Roots, Bernie Worrell, Bill Laswell, Melvin Gibbs, Fred Wesley, Sean Kuti and many more. DJ Logic and his role as an electronic-music ambassador keeps him at the top of his game. Whether the scratch artist instructs tablas to flirt with drum ‘n’ bass (such as on his Nina Simone and Billy Holiday remixes found on Sony Legacy’s Remixed and Reimagined volumes), meshes free styling MC’s with Afro-Cuban rhythms (such as on ‘Share Worldwide Funk’ – a remix produced for Jack DeJohnette and Golden Beams Collected, Volume 1), or remixes tracks for rock bands such as Moon Taxi, DJ Logic can always be found paying homage to his predecessors while contributing his vision to the deejay genre. While the context of his work may vary, DJ Logic’s spinning skills are definitely beyond reproach. He works with a phenomenal roster of invited guests, and he knows how to pick his collaborators as well as his samples. With a growing catalogue of recordings under his belt, DJ Logic’s supreme musicianship and eclectic tastes will allow him to journey wherever an infectious groove may take him.
